You then hoped the person would call you back on the number you left. Usually your home lan line, there were no cell phones back then. I got wise to the game quickly. Of course the newspaper would want people to leave long drawn out individual messages to as many ad placers as possible to run up the meter. But I came up with a standard message that worked well for me. I would call and leave a message like this: Hi I am Fred (not my real name, but I did leave my real name), I am a good looking 33 year old attorney who is searching for a young and attractive young lady who is full of life and enjoys being spoiled... Can you believe it I do not recall the rest of the message. But that message worked. I got called back by almost every girl I left that message for. And from the little part I did remember you can see why I was called back. Like I said I cannot remember the whole message but I do remember the part about wanting to spoil the girl. That was the part that interested them. I also mentioned I was a lawyer and that did not hurt. Tell a girl you are a lawyer and she thinks she you make a lot of money. That might not be so true today as I have not made much money since I became a lawyer. But back in the classifed ad days it probably helped me a little.
